Video Pool is a nonprofit Artist-Run Centre dedicated to independent video, audio and computer integrated multimedia production, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

1983        

Founded and incorporated January 19, in Winnipeg, Canada

1984        

Workshops begun

Women Artists in Video (WAIV) collective supporting women’s productions

1988        

First full-time Distribution Coordinator hired

1989-92    

Video Drive In outdoor screenings; Ex-Patria screening and lecture series

1992        

Artist in Residence (A.I.R.) and First Video Fund (FVF) programs begun

Shades of a Different Colour workshops for visible minorities; Making Sense with Sound exhibition

1994-97    

The Video Installation Project

1994        

Programming included For A Radio, pirate radio broadcast; Sanja Ivekovic (Croatia) 5 week artist residency, talk and screening; Van TV, programming of video installations in parking lots; Sara Diamond screening

1995        

Media Production Fund introduced; Web site & online distribution catalogue developed; Programming included Light/Light, offsite, multimedia performance event; Vice Versa Lesbian Video and Film Festival; Myrel Chernick (USA) 8 week residency, talk and screening

1996        

Wendy Geller Fund established; Partnership with CIGMO groups on media development project; First Nations Video Workshops; Programming included Blender TV, 7 half hours of artists’ videos produced with VPW-TV; Technology Is (Just) a Tool screenings and symposia

1997        

Video A - Z, year long workshops for underprivileged youth; Educational Coordinator hired; VP on CD, compilation of work from Video Pool’s A.I.R. program; Programming included Global Attic Video Festival (Winnipeg, Rotterdam), NY/Winnipeg video exchange

1998

Animator/Reanimator curated package tours to Japan

Strategic Plan created

Northern Aboriginal Artist Fund (one-month mentorship and production residency) established (participants Apetagon & Carriere); Fast Forward program for at-risk youth established; Winnipeg 19 curated package tours to Japan

2009

Escape (curated package) tours Canada and the United States.

2010

5.1 Surround Sound Editing Suite constructed in the Technical Department.

2011

Video Pool hired a new Director: Melentie Pandilovski on April 24, 2011. He is a new media art curator and theorist and previously was the former director of The Experimental Art Foundation in Adelaide, Australia. He has also taught at the Euro –Balkan Institute in Skopje, Macedonia.

Completion of Phase II of Video Pools 5.1 Surround Suite Production Facilities. This suite will serve Video Pool members engaged in video production, audio art, interactive technologies and installation, as well as film producers from the Winnipeg Film Group.

Canadian Commission for UNESCO  "Do you see what I think?" Youth Video Project.

Video Pool worked with young Canadians who were strongly motivated and involved in their communities to speak out under the theme " Dialogue and Mutual Understanding" as part of  "International Year of Youth"  (held at IRCOM) Immigrant Refugee Community of Manitoba.

Aboriginal Video Art Scholarship (AVAS) initiated by Video Pool to provide new and emerging Aboriginal artists based in northern/rural Manitoba living in Winnipeg with enhanced opportunities for the production of independent media artwork.

FFWD - Youth Arts Initiative Program providing Winnipeg youth with greater and more meaningful access to the arts.  Partnership with Ka Ni Kanichihk and the Rainbow Resource Centre.

Partnering with Winnipeg Film Group on Video Camera & Final Cut Pro workshops.

OpenLab- an initiative by the Education and Outreach coordinator and local multi-media artist Andrew Milne. The Open Lab also consists of monthly free drop-in sessions, whereby works in interactive electronic media are explored with participants. Open Lab has applied to present a workshop and  lecture in New Mexico for The Eighteenth International Symposium on Electronic Art, ISEA2012 Albuquerque: Machine Wilderness.

2012

Video Pool partners with aceartinc. for LITE NITE: Art's Birthday 2012 and international exhibition programing.

Aboriginal Media Art Initiative 2012 (an emersive program designed by Video Pool to assist Aboriginl artists, either emergng or already practicing in any discipline, with the creation of a short video or media art piece. Deadline for submissions: Febrauary 15, 2012 see Outreach for more information.

Sound Series (4 parts) hosted by Video Pool & WFG, sponsored by The National Film Board is underway and well attended
