Tam will talk about his experiences spending time with the Navy and his recent work stemming from footage collected during his participation in the Canadian Forces Artist Program, which invites artists to experience and make art about the operations of the Forces.
As Artist-in-Residence at Western Front Media Arts from October to December 2009, Tam completed on a three-channel video piece that examines different fascinations with naval life and sea travel.
More recently, he has been working on a project that is partly realized in China on the theme of travel. On the side, he is also working on a book of conversations with Canadian artists to be published in China.
Born in Hong Kong and educated in Canada and the United States, Ho Tam works across many disciplines including painting, video, photography, print and public art. He has exhibited in various cities in North America, including recent showings at McMaster Museum of Art (Hamilton, CA) and the Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA). He is a graduate of Whitney Museum Independent Studies Program and Bard College, and has taught at the University of Victoria and University of Toronto. Tam is represented by Paul Petro Contemporary Art (Toronto, CA).

International award winning media art studio Artificiel will be presenting their POWEr work at this years’ festival. Alongside this incredible work, Alexandre Burton & Julien Roy (founding members), will give an in-depth talk on the concepts behind their practice, namely the notion of building a work of art in parallel to developing an instrument and the processes that this practice requires. The thoughtful process of developing new instruments and work for various types of presentation (installation, live performance, in-situ interventions) has been Artificiel’s focus over the last 10 years. Their works explore energy as a fundamental element, pushing outside of the box to construct engaging and interactive media art through hand built tesla coils, lightbulbs as instruments and Rubik’s cubes as triggers to illustrate the relationship between colour and sound.
This event will have an open Q&A type format with send + receive director crys cole guiding the discussion.
