DANGEROUS HEADBANDS: NEW WAVE VIDEOS FROM THE VAULT
curated by Hope Peterson
These examples of homegrown countercultural weirdness dated 1981 to 1986 have a charmingly lo-fi appearance that was exclusive to the first consumer camcorders on the market. Many are abstract and experimental (often danceable!) glimpses into the prairie underground scene, culminating in the perverse John Waters-esque melodrama Sinfonia Domestica!
Curated by JJ Kegan McFadden
Various metaphors for escape are alluded to in the fifteen videos collected here: disguise, travel, dance, sex, and meditation each become important elements on this ESCAPE route.
Winnipeg 19: Experimental Cinema and Avant-Garde Video from the Coldest City on Earth
Curated by Dave Barber
Rooted on this windswept barren prairie is a city which stayed true to itself while progress marched on elsewhere. No skyscrapers. No gleaming expensive cars. Deserted streets. Winnipeg-a city which gave birth to the Winnipeg 19. Nineteen artists who looked within and found something greater and more original than the outside world.
Walking and Being
Curated by Grant Guy
Walking and Being is a 94 minute collection of video art carefully created by independent video artists over the past twenty years. The collection proposes that understanding the beauty in life's simple tasks is one of the most powerful forms of enlightenment. Each of these fourteen videos reveal the simplicity of beauty. Walking and Being opens a door for the mind to examine itself outside of the context of panic and urgency that chases us at work, at play and even at rest.
Animator/Re-Animator
Curated by Murray Toews
Curated by Murray Toews, Animator/Re-Animator is a visual exploration of the evolution of the independent animator. The festival represents 18 animated works from Canadian Prairie animators from 1990 to 2004.
